Bored???? I can keep you busy and motivated!

Yup - if you are bored, let me know! I can keep you very busy...

Of course you should go to work every day, so that will take up some time.

Then you could volunteer for a nice local organization... my choices in Northeast CT are Saturdays and Sundays in the Habitat ReStore - and at fairs & carnival type settings for The Last Green Valley. Certainly there are plenty to choose from in your area!

There is always fun to have with your family and friends, and if you do not have a child in your life, visit them often! My fortune was grand this week in visiting lots of kiddos - our newest baby cousin, 4 month old Austin; 2 awesome brothers Matthew & Ryan; 2 twin sissies Ally & Brookie; and last but certainly not least, the star of Putnamania, my Sethie! Kids will bring you so much more joy!!!

Then you can set a huge goal for yourself - something you think you will really have to work to accomplish. For me it is training to walk 9 laps/45miles in August before the 23rd Annual Deary Memorial Road Race, and then the final lap with the actual walkers. This will give me 50 miles in one fell swoop! I once heard a coach say "Don't try to be good tomorrow, try to be better every day."  I have that saying on my bedroom wall so I see it every day.
Learn more about the Deary Memorial Cancer Fund by clicking here.

So, although I attended a motivational seminar today in Hartford with my boss and some co-workers, I am pretty sure I have been rather motivated throughout most of my life.

I am not be as financially wealthy as the speakers I heard today, however I enjoy a comfortable life thanks to my lifelong efforts and I am FILTHY rich in many other ways!

I am a Putnamaniac that likes to keep busy and can motivate myself just fine!

Poky Little Putnamaniac!

Did your momma read you The Poky Little Puppy back when you were but a wee little child?

I had somehow forgotten all about this book, until I just ran past a mailbox that had a picture on it  - and it looked just like the Poky Little Puppy!

So... I had a nice little chuckle at seeing that and then I remembered my momma reading this classic book to me & Skee. I am sure I read it years later to Sue & Si as well.

Good family fun! Good times!

I am a Poky Little Putnamaniac that loves all the silly things I see when I am out jogging around!

Seriously - Memorial Day!

I am so thankful I never had to sacrifice myself...

I am a wuss - I am not courageous...

But, seriously, I am so thankful that others have sacrificed and are courageous...

Some great books I have read (and reread) that really make you think about veterans and the effects of war in general are:

Night, but Elie Wiesel

Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand - the story of  WWII vet and runner, Louis Zamperini

The Diary of Anne Frank

These things will break your heart and remind you of the strength of mankind.

I will be at the Memorial Day Parade tomorrow morning in Putnamania starting at 10am, standing with my hand on my heart for those who did what I never could.

I am the most thankful Putnamaniac to those who have served!

Flowers from my imaginary boyfriends and very real & sweet Putnamaniac friends!

I just got home from a hot day at  but good day of sales at the Habitat ReStore here in Putnam - on days like this my name tag should say "Sweaty Betty" instead of "Marcy".

Of course my decision to wear a long sleeved t-shirt under my regular t-shirt did not help! I am not very wise in fashion.

However, I am very wise in my choice of imaginary boyfriends and real life friends...

This might explain a bit more:

I found this beautiful plant, along with a wonderful card and movie passes from.... wait for it.... NOT George Clooney, not Bruce Willis, but Will Smith!

In reality, of course a delightfully thoughtful person who knows of my imaginary only love life did this...the same delightfully thoughtful person that delivered the George Clooney gigantic heart shaped cookie and card to my doorstep for Valentine's Day.

How can a girl be so lucky?????? I don't know, but I am glad that I am such a lucky girl!

I am a Putnamaniac because my real friends are even better than my imaginary friends!

Marching, Parades, Cookouts! 'Tis the Weekend for all of this and more!

Memorial Day weekend is here!

It is always something people look forward to for so many reasons... the beginning of summer and cookouts, there are parades to march in or to cheer for...just plain old family fun!

I will be front and center at the Putnam Memorial Day Parade starting at 10am on Monday, May 28th.  See all of the local events here in Putnamania on WINY Radio's website.

It is easy to forget the reason for Memorial Day if you have not served in the military or aren't close with someone who is now serving.

Here is a simple tribute I found on youtube.

And here is an old Bob Hope classic visit to the troops in a hospital, this one during WWII

Check out Whitney Houston grandly singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl some years back.

What a world.

I am very thankful for those people I've never met that have made my life so great.

Being the sap that I am, I have tears streaming out of my eyes as I write this blog and think of what a world this can be - and the sacrifices that so many have made.

I am a Putnamaniac looking forward to celebrating the Memorial Day weekend!

If you're happy and you know it....

Some times I just feel pretty happy without having to try or think about it...

This is one of those moments, and the children's song "If you're happy and you know it" keeps coming to my mind. (Check out good old Barney the Purple Dinosaur singing it with his little friends here).

Since life throws many things at us, isn't it great to celebrate just being happy once in a while?

So, if you are happy and you know it, clap your hands!

I am a Putnamaniac that just likes to enjoy the easy days in life when I am happy and I know it!

Iris Explosion!

Is there an Iris EXPLOSION occurring where you live?

It is taking place in a marvelous fashion here in Putnamania and all throughout Northeast CT.

They are exploding in my yard, my neighbor's yards, in the parks - just about everywhere!

I can't remember seeing so many iris all over the place ever before. I love it!

Enjoy them while they last!

I am a Putnamaniac that is just loving the iris explosion this year!

Convoy.... 10-4 Rubber Duck

Yup - I was in a Convoy today!

The lead car had CT license plate "Convoy"...and there were all sorts of those long floppy antennas on the vehicle, too...

I joined in (since it was only one lane in the direction we were going).

Then I started thinking of the old song by CW McCall, Convoy. Take a listen on youtube. It will stay stuck in your head forever....................

Remember when cb radios were all the craze? I knew lots of people that had them, and apparently some are still enjoying them!

I am a Putnamaniac that joined in a Convoy driving home from work today - and I'll catch you on the flip side, good buddy!

Flags are lining the streets of Putnamania!

Pretty much the best thing ever is when you drive back into town after a Monday at work, and the streets are now lined with the Grand Old Flag ~ The Red, White and Blue.

With the Memorial Day weekend coming up, it is surely happening all around the country.

I sure hope it is happening in your town.

The Memorial Day Parade always makes me choke up with tears as the Veterans of all ages march by humble little old me.

I appreciate all the gave and that others still give so I can live in beautiful Putnamania!

Check out this Patriotic Music by George M. Cohan on youtube. OK - where is my hanky??

I am a Putnamaniac because we line the roads with flags to celebrate Memorial Day!

Life in Putnamania - as quaint as this picture!

The weekends are always great because I get to stay in town, in Putnamania!

Granted, I spend at least 14 of these precious hours volunteering in the Habitat ReStore, but I am still in Putnam. I'll take it. (The ReStore is a dirty job, but someone's got to do it!

So tonight as I was sitting in my lawn chair, reading Frank McCourt's 'Tis, soaking up the sun, listening to the Little River roll by and the birds chirp, I thought how happy I am that I found Putnam.

What exactly is it that I find so appealing??

I'm not sure...

It might be the small town, normal people type of place it is. The beauty. The peacefulness. The you see a friendly face every where you go thing. The way we all stick together...all this and so much more.

This painting by Tom Menard is just perfect! I jogged right by this very spot at about 7:15 this morning!

I am a Putnamaniac because life here is perfect for me - and just as quaint as this picture!

ReStore, ReCycle, ReModel, Re-Do-It

Habitat ReStores are pretty simple, so I will keep it short and sweet.

People and businesses donate to the ReStore.

The ReStore sells to people that are ReStoring, ReModeling, and Re-Doing their homes.

The money that the ReStore earns goes towards Habitat's goal of building houses in the community.

Sweet!

Come and visit a ReStore near you - our's in Putnamania is located at 171 Providence St, right across from Turtle's Tacos & Putnam Supermarket.

For example of product: We got three of these brand new tub/showers/surrounds in today...BRAND NEW with a ReStore price of less than half of what the Big Box sells them for!

I am a Putnamaniac that loves the Habitat ReStore and what it is all about - and I always need a shower after working my butt off in Putnam's ReStore each weekend!

May Apples in May in the Renegade Garden!

There are May Apples from my mom's garden blooming in my Renegade Garden - in May! How appropriate!

I took a little tour of what else is popping up out in the Renegade - 99% of these plants found their homes here after leaving other comfy gardens.... besides my mother's garden in RI, there are also transplants from all over CT as well.

That is the joy of gardening - sharing the plants, the people, and the stories!

I am a Putnamaniac that loves the May Apples and all other transplants from great gardens into my Renegade Garden!

Wild Kingdom today at the Willimantic Reservoir!

Although a jog was not on my training program for the 50 miles I plan to do in August, I felt like a little jog after work anyways, so I stopped at the Willimantic Reservoir/Airport.

So glad I did!

It was like Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom set right in CT! (Remember that show??? Check out Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom here - it started back in the day of just 3 tv channels to choose from).

These members of the wild kingdom I saw as I jogged today along the slim path that divides the reservoir from the airport - in no particular order:
Snake (I saw the same bold fellow 3 times - Yikes)!
Swans (2 beauties clearly in swan love)
Blue Heron
Red Winged Blackbirds
Pet Dogs walking their people
Turkey
Groundhog
Canada Geese
Monarch Butterflies
and the oddest of all...
A lady walking with a big green parrot on her arm - no lie, as bizarre as it seemed!

I am so glad I stopped to jog and saw all these things! It wouldn't have surprised me to see an elephant!

Here's to hoping you were able to get out an enjoy some of the wild kingdom yourself today!

I am a Putnamaniac that saw a lot of the Wild Kingdom at the Willimantic Reservoir today!

Junk in my trunk!

Today I am proud to say I had some junk in my trunk.

Literally in my Faithful Ford Focus trunk I had..... well, it was full, but it was certainly not junk.

My generous neighbor, Larry Legs, (read my previous blog about Larry), who works for Pastene, is so kind and thoughtful that he delivers many of his fine Pastene products to my doorstep, for me in turn to deliver to our local food bank in Putnam, the Daily Bread.

Larry began to do this because on occasion I have had a food drive party or two for all my condo neighbors.

Even without my parties, he continues to donate on a regular basis just because he is a good guy and knows some in our community need the help. It always inspires me to add to his donation when I make my Wednesday night deliveries.

It is great to have people who inspire you to think of others!

I am a Putnamaniac that had a lot of junk in my trunk this afternoon! The good kind!

Route 169 from Canterbury to Brooklyn - one of the most gorgeous places on earth!

In the gentle spring rain this afternoon, I took a ride along Route 169, from Canterbury to Brooklyn, CT.

Breathtaking.

There are no words to describe what has to be truly one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Pictures can't do it justice, either.

If you don't live around here, you must take a ride and see it for yourself.

Green as far as the eye can see at this time of year. I mean, this is The Last Green Valley

I'd be happy to take you for that ride so you can enjoy the view!

I am a Putnamaniac that lives in the most beautiful place on earth and can't imagine living anywhere else!

Stuff in your house - what are the stories ???

Do you look around your house and see memories.... memories of people, places, good times??

I sure do!

My condo is fabulous - well built - roomy - very comfy - and has a collection of stuff obtained for very little dollar value, but very high sentimental value to me.

Since I hate to shop, and spend money, I tend to treasure gifts and stuff I find where I find it.

My dining room table was purchased at a consignment shop when I bought my first house way back when.

My bedroom bureaus are the set my sister had in her room as a little girl. I will never part with them.

There is a great wicker set on my porch, from a friend for $100.

And my walls are covered with pictures that mean only endless and priceless value to me...along with some other fine delights, such as this flag, which I won at a raffle at a Moosup Valley Grange dinner a few years back with some great folks....

I am a Putnamaniac that hopes you enjoy as many great memories as I do when you look around your house!

The evening birds are shaking their booties!

After spending a nice day working with my old pal, Tony, in the Habitat ReStore, I came home to enjoy some time in my Renegade Garden...

Lovely!

Along with the delightful Little River rushing past, I had my favorite local radio station, WINY radio, playing out the window...I love this station even when the "local" guys and gals are not on.

Apparently, so do all the evening birds in Putnamania!

As such classics as Journey, Kenny Loggins, Michael Jackson, and Phil Collins entertained and harmonized over the airwaves, the birds tuned up, too.

After exiting a badly needed shower, I heard KC and the Sunshine Band Shaking Their Booties, and the bird were tuned up times ten!! I love it! With the classic music and nature's music, I could not help but shake my bootie just a bit, too!

I took this quick picture from my porch with a little birdie shaking her bootie and singing wildly, sitting on top of St. Someone's head! Good Times for all of us!!!

I am a Putnamaniac, shaking my bootie with the evening birds - whooping it up!

50 Miles is catching on for the pre-Deary Road Race!

We have this crazy Putnamaniac named Scott Deslongchamps.

We also have a 5 mile event every August called the Deary Memorial Race, Walk, and Ride.

If you live in Northeast CT, you know how this person and this event coincide.

To raise money for this cancer fund, in which ALL the funds raised stay local to help local people, Scott not only runs the 5 mile course once, he runs it 10 times - do the math - that is 50 MILES!!

He starts out at around midnight the night before the race, does 9 laps over night, with some supportive pals tagging along side, and then completes the last lap (miles 45-60) with the race event runners - and he smokes it!

I think he is amazing - and inspirational....

So, this year to make things more exciting, I am going to attempt to walk the 50 miles as Scott runs the 50 miles. Since the walkers course and the runners course go in the opposite direction, we will pass each other all throughout the night. I hope to be able to get enough supportive and crazy pals to accompany me for a lap each as the night progresses to the morning.... on my final lap I am hoping to be joined by many other of my Putnamania friends and condo neighbors for the 8am Fun Walk.

In my efforts to help Scott raise as much money as possible for this great local fund, I am going to make Putnamaniac Mega 50 cookies - 50 ingredients for 50 miles! (Tomorrow's blog on 5/12/12 will list the 50 ingredients...so stay tuned).

I will give a nice big & as healthy as can be cookie to everyone who donates to Scott for the Deary fund. So, get those donations rolling in to me. They will inspire me in my training process along the way!

You can call me: 860-933-5425 or email me: dawleymarcy@yahoo.com, or facebook me.

If you would like to run, walk or bike this event, you can register yourself by clicking this link.

You can also like the Deary Memorial Race, Walk or Ride on facebook by clicking here.

Game is on people!!!!

I am a Putnamaniac because 50 miles is catching on for the pre-Deary Road Race!!!

Birthday Caroling at the Condos today!

Big doings at the Sabin Landing Condos in Putnamania today!

One of our neighbors turned 80!

Another neighbor turned 90!

So since it is much warmer in May than it is in December, some of us went Birthday Caroling!!!

Fine tunes and tones and harmonies were heard throughout the neighborhood as we gathered to sing some Birthday Carols to our beloved neighbors!

I hope you had something nice to celebrate today as well.

I am a Putnamaniac that enjoyed some Birthday Caroling with and for my fine neighbors today!

Forgotten 45's do not forget the fun!

Back when I was a kid, we bought our favorite tunes on vinyl - either 45's, which contained an A side with the popular song, and a B side with a not so popular song - or albums, which contained a whole bunch of songs.

45's had a big hole in the middle of them... and if you didn't have a fat tube adapter to put on your stereo, you used one of these adapters shown in the picture. Then you could play them on the skinny needle like thing that you put the albums on.

Great sounds - and the art work on albums was a collection in and of itself!

You had to be careful not to scratch them....

Times have changed, and so has music, as it always will.

Putnamania's local radio station, WINY Radio, plays a "Forgotten 45" each morning at about 8:20-8:30am. They are always a great blast from the past (which doesn't seem like it could actually have been that long ago). Listeners are encouraged to request these.

You know this Putnamaniac requests quite often - things like:
The Partridge Family's I think I love you
Climax's Precious & Few
The Carpenter's Bless the Beasts and the Children
John Denver's Thank God I'm a Country Boy

You also know I just requested another one - WINY's Putnamaniac extraordinaire Gary O let me know that tomorrow he is playing it!
Badfingers' No Matter What

What a great place to live! You can request your own forgotten 45, and it gets played! Good times!

I am a Putnamaniac because we remember the Forgotten 45's and never forget to have fun!

Hand holding everywhere in Putnamania tonight!

I had no clue what I would do for a Putnamania blog today.

I was very impatient at work - a bad personality trait of mine - I work on it all the time.

After stopping for a 5 mile jog at the Willimantic Reservoir/Airport, that helped change the mood for the better, but still no inspiration appeared to me for Putnamania...

...Until I drove into Putnam to home sweet home.

I saw about 162 couples holding hands! This is NO EXAGGERATION I tell you!

The hand holders were all ages, and they were everywhere! Putnamania was full of love, and that is just how I was feeling as I drove past all of the hand holders on my way home.

I am a Putnamaniac because it is a great place to hold hands! Come and feel the love!

Sweet Putnamania Dreams!

One of the best things about where I live in Putnam, is that is a great place to lay my head and rest my bones at the end of busy days.

My condo sits way back from the not so busy road, so there is not much traffic at night to hear.

There is nothing but woods and river behind my place, so the sounds of nature alone lull me to sleep.

It is dark... no big city, bright lights to keep me up... just a bright moon once in a while...

So as I am pooped out from a busy weekend in Putnamania, I will get ready for bed and sweet dreams.

And I wish you the sweetest of dreams, too.

Hopefully you live in such a restful and peaceful place, too.

I am a Putnamaniac that loves the silent nights here in the Quiet Corner, and I wish you many sweet dreams!

I went looking for gooseberries at Fort Hill Farms today, and found a lot more!

Fort Hill Farms in Thompson, CT is owned by my friend, Kristin Orr and family.

She teaches me something new every time I talk to her.

The other night she was telling me about the gooseberries, and that they were now in bloom. I wanted to see them and learn more.

Today I went to Fort Hill Farms to check it out. Shortly after I arrived, she brought me directly to the bush, loaded with blossoms that will soon be gooseberries. The honey bees were busily buzzing.

Then we went to the currant bush! Currants!!! No way... I had to come home and look them up!

The blueberries were also blooming wildly, as was everything else at this time of year.

If you are my facebook friend, you can see all the stunning pictures I took there today by clicking here.

Since Fort Hill Farms is part of The Farmers Cow, they carry all their local products as well. I mean, how local can you get? Fort Hill Farms' cows milk IS Farmers Cow milk... and ice cream.... I could not resist a cup full of Raspberry Moo Chocolate Chip... I'm 100% sure it was the best I've ever had... Ice cream lovers, please take note of this and get yourselves to Fort Hill Farms to have some as soon as you can!

One of The Farmers Cow newest products is "Up Early Coffee"... Kristin ground a can for me, and I am bringing it to my moms tomorrow. There are 3 varieties available: De-Calf, Dark Roast, and Breakfast Blend....

So the message today is there is always something more to learn in life... and even when you head out to learn one thing, you learn much more... and enjoy much more than you thought you would.

Open minds are a good thing! Supporting local businesses is also a good thing!

I am a Putnamaniac that went looking for gooseberry bushes today at Fort Hill Farms and found so much more!

Is it extra bright when the sun comes out after a few days of rain??

I don't know about you, but it seems to me that when the sun comes out after a few very rainy and dreary days, it is SUPER bright!

This afternoon was one of those times.

WOW. Dazzled by the brilliance!

People also came out of the woodwork (well, at least they came out of their homes to enjoy the rays).

The River Walk was jammed, including a mom pushing a baby carriage-with little legs swinging out of it at a fast speed,  a couple walking their two twin dogs, and a few of the inspiring Follow the Fifty Models of Heart Health

Now...let us all enjoy some of the brightness and watch things grow!!! With the rain we needed badly, and now the sun doing its magic... it will soon be a jungle out there!

Enjoy the extra brightness of every day, and not just the brightness from the sky, but the brightness in all of your life!

I am a Putnamania that loves the brightness in my life, especially when the sun comes back out after a few rainy days!

The Quiet Corner is resting up for a not so quiet weekend!

Tonight the town is quiet - really living up to the name "The Quiet Corner"....

We are resting up for a jammed packed weekend! Hold onto your hats!

Friday night is the FIRST First Friday of the season (they run the first Friday of every month from May through December). This Putnamaniac will be helping out at The Last Green Valley booth - it is where we live! SAD TO ANNOUNCE THIS NIGHT HAS BEEN CANCELED DUE TO THE WEATHER FORECAST (However, we have many more First Fridays to come, and I will be at The Last Green Valley Booth)....

The Bradley Playhouse opens The Sunshine Boys, which runs 3 weekends in a row (Fri, Sat, Sun).

Downtown Danielson has Saturday loaded up with Kidz Days and then Harmonies and Hops (a sort of battle of the bands and home brew competition.

The Jog with Judy 5k road race is taking place on Saturday in Woodstock.

85 Main's Oyster Fest is in Rotary Park on Sunday.

There is a fishing tournament in Thompson at Valley Spring Sportsman Club on Sunday, with great prizes.

Check out the Quiet Corner's not so Quiet events for this weekend and year round on WINY radio's website.

I have barely touched the tip of the iceberg.... So much to do... So many choices!

Seriously - clone yourself times ten and you might be able to partake in all the fun!

I am a Putnamaniac because I am resting up for a jammed packed, fun-filled weekend!

A housefull of wild kids grew up into such great adults!

Driving back to Putnamania just now after having been to RI for the celebration of the life a friend's father & father in law, I passed a mini van with a wild bunch of kids.

Arms were flailing, toys were flying, and I am sure the noise level was up there.

This mayhem reminded me growing up with my family and with the family across the street from us. I saw them tonight at the calling hours.

They had 4 kids in their family. We had 4 kids in our family.

Their oldest daughter was rather calm and quiet. The 2nd oldest daughter was a little devilish. The 3rd oldest daughter was quite devilish and lovable at the same time. The youngest child - a boy was just trying  to hold his own with all those older sisters!

Our family stories intertwine a lot, because these were stories we all made together.

Since I was the oldest of the bunch, I tend to remember not only their family, but my siblings as the "kids" - still - even though we are all 40-50+ years old now.

Since I am still the oldest of the bunch, I always feel very proud of them all. I feel proud of both my neighbors and my siblings. I have nothing to do with how they turned out, but I am still very proud of them all. They have grown up into such admirable, outstanding and fine adults.

Good job by the parents who deserve the credit. Job well done!

I predict that car full of wild hooligans that I passed on my way home tonight will also turn out just fine!

I am a Putnamaniac that is so proud of all the wild kids that grew up into such outstanding adults!

Brainstorming for Habitat and our ReStore! BRAINSTORMING!

Since the early 1950's brainstorming has been a well used and popular way to get things done.

At least the phrase has been around since the early 1950's, but clearly this brainstorming method of problem solving must have been around since time began...

We had a meeting at the Habitat ReStore tonight in Putnam, and we did some good old fashioned brainstorming!

It really works well.

An idea or thought is on the agenda....in our case, people have had a few days before the meeting to mull these thoughts over, and are ready to fire back with their own ideas. It is like a snowball rolling down hill, picking up speed and coming to rest as a great big positive thing.

Amazing!

If you are stuck in your thought process on anything - whether it is for work, personal...whatever... call in some others and do some brainstorming! You may solve your problem or dilemma very easily.

If you have some household or building items to donate, or if you like to shop locally and for great bargains, come to our Putnam Habitat ReStore, located at 171 Providence St (across from Putnam Supermarket, Turtle's Tacos, and Bousquets Kitchens).

I am a Putnamaniac because I love brainstorming for our Putnam Habitat ReStore!
