Originally they served two purposes:
1) They stood out on the horizon so travelers of yesteryear could easily find towns and their places of worship.
2) They were symbolic of reaching towards heaven.
Driving home last night, with the full moon rising, this steeple in Brooklyn caught my eye more than it usually does. The sky was just right. It almost looks fake. I pulled over and took these shots.
Wow! Mother Nature sure is an amazing gal!
I am a Putnamaniac because all things are looking up, including the many beautiful steeples!
